Position Summary

Saint John is Canada’s oldest incorporated City, incorporated in 1785. With a population of approximately 68,000 people, Saint John is located on the Bay of Fundy (home to the world’s largest tides). Saint John boasts the incredible Trinity-Royal Heritage District (largest concentration of heritage buildings in Canada), beautiful parks (such as Rockwood Park and the Irving Nature Park) and amazing coastal scenery, and world renowned food culture and night life.

As a member of the Community Planning team, you will be play a pivotal role in helping to bring growth and prosperity to Saint John. This position is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or planner wanting experience in a variety of planning roles.

This position is a valued member of the City’s Growth and Community Development Services Department which supports Saint John achieve its long term vision of sustainable growth and a diverse, vibrant, resilient community. Reporting to the Manager of Community Planning, this position ensures exemplary service to our customers (both public and internal) and supports the Growth and Community Planning team in the effective delivery of long range planning, development approvals, population growth, arts and culture.

Key Responsibilities

Support the achievement of the City of Saint John’s innovative municipal plan implementation and provide strategic policy advice on a variety of planning related matters as well support towards development approvals.

Champion innovative planning in the community and bring a commitment to smart growth principles and a solid track record of successful engagement with community partners.

Support policy development within the Growth and Community Development Service Area, inclusive of the following focus areas: economic development, land-use planning, infrastructure, transportation, sustainability, neighborhoods, heritage and urban design, and parks and recreation.
Support delivery of the Department’s development approvals program, which facilitates customer service excellence and continuous improvement on behalf of the City’s One Stop Development Shop.

Play a supportive role in the development, implementation and ongoing monitoring of the City of Saint John’s economic development service delivery, the Roadmap for Smart Growth, Population Growth Framework as well as neighborhood planning.

Enhance the Service Area’s evidence-based decision-making, through the development, dissemination, analysis and reporting of quantitative and qualitative research, including within the areas of: statistics, economic and population forecasting, financial and budget analysis, valuation.

You will be an effective communicator and collaborator to build strong working relationships with key community stakeholders including the development community, citizens, the Planning Advisory Committee, the Growth Committee and Common Council.

This position will offer the opportunity for the successful candidate to gain experience in a broad spectrum of planning functions and projects and not be stuck in one silo of the planning spectrum.

Education & Experience

The ideal candidate will be a professional planner with membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners with two years’ experience. The hiring committee will consider candidates with complementary skills with a university degree in social sciences, urban studies, economics, public administration or a related discipline, preferably at a graduate level with recent graduation or upcoming graduation. Candidates who are recent graduates or with reduced experience will be considered at a developmental level. Experience in the use of ARCGIS and sketchup will be considered an asset.
