Conflict Resolution and Facilitation Approaches in Urban Planning
In this Lunch and Learn event, Alain Paulin, a professional mediator, will present a conflict
resolution framework that includes options to manage conflict in organizations and in society.
Drawing on this framework, he will stress the importance of exploring underlying needs when
facing positional individuals while conducting meetings. Alain will also discuss how facilitation
principles, methodologies and techniques can be of benefit in professional planning practice and
he will share some of his experiences facilitating various community groups. He will conclude the
session by providing resources for reading and training as well as suggestions for what a
professional facilitator can do in project planning.
Biography
A Chartered Mediator, Alain Paulin has more than 30 years of experience in communications,
labour relations and conflict resolution. Since 2013, he operates Sphera Facilitation Inc. providing
mediation, facilitation and training services to governmental organizations (municipal, provincial
and federal), learning institutions as well as to non-governmental organizations and community
groups. Alain offers training in topics related to mediation, facilitation, communications and
conflict resolution.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Communications, a certificate in Negotiation and
Conflict Management, a graduate diploma in Peace and Conflict Studies and has completed a
program of Introduction to Common Law. He has taken numerous professional workshops in
Canada and the United States.
