Assistant Professor in Urban Planning and Climate Change

The School of Planning at Dalhousie University invites applications for a probationary tenure-stream Assistant Professor position, starting in July 2022.

The School of Planning at Dalhousie University serves the Atlantic region of Canada as the only professional planning school east of Quebec. The School offers graduate and undergraduate professionally accredited planning degrees (Bachelor of Community Design honours and Master of Planning), an undergraduate degree in community design and a research-based graduate degree (Master of Planning Studies). Current enrollment stands at over 50 graduate and 150 undergraduate students. The School is looking for an outstanding candidate with research expertise in urban planning and climate change, particularly in the areas of climate change mitigation and/or adaptation. The successful candidate should have a clearly articulated and directed research focus and demonstrated promise in research and scholarship. We value interdisciplinary research approaches on creating just and sustainable physical environments that reconcile economic and social goals with the challenges of climate change. The successful candidate will be expected to advance a teaching and research agenda in one or more of the following sub-areas: spatial planning and analysis, infrastructure planning, urban design, planning history and theory, energy policy and sustainability assessments. The candidate should demonstrate proficient use of GIS technology in research and/or teaching. Experience in using visual representation techniques and technology in teaching would be considered assets.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in planning or a relevant field. The candidate should also have a professional degree in planning. Being a registered or licensed professional planner (RPP or LPP, for instance) as recognized by the Professional Standard Board (PSB) for planning profession in Canada, or demonstrating a commitment to seeking professional certification following acceptance of the offer, is a considerable asset. The new faculty member will be expected to teach core and elective courses in the graduate and undergraduate programs, supervise thesis students, advance the discipline through research and scholarship, and actively engage in administrative functions to shape the School’s future. In keeping with the School’s present strengths and directions, we expect the person in this position to be comfortable in an interdisciplinary setting, demonstrate leadership on collaborative activities, and bring innovative ideas to advance planning research and teaching.
