2026 Murray Pinchuk Award
November 3, 2026
PEIIPP is pleased to announce the 2026 Murray Pinchuk Community Builder Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to community building to the late Phil Ferraro and his work with the Legacy Garden.
Established by Phil Ferraro in 2014, the Legacy Garden has grown into one of Canada’s largest urban farms. Each year, it produces more than 10,000 pounds of fresh food, which is distributed to food banks and seniors’ facilities across Prince Edward Island. Beyond food production, the Legacy Garden fosters community connection and inclusion through more than 200 community garden plots, along with a variety of workshops and programs. These initiatives provide tailored support and opportunities for youth at risk, newcomers to PEI, individuals living with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and members of the PEI Parkinson’s and Alzheimer Societies.
Phil’s Legacy Gardens demonstrate the meaningful impact that can be achieved through a strong commitment to community and a passion for making a difference. Through this initiative, Phil has helped build a connected and engaged community, strengthen local food systems and food security across Prince Edward Island, and advance environmental stewardship.
Please join us on World Town Planning Day this Friday, November 6, at 12 p.m. at the Farm Centre (420 University Avenue) to celebrate Phil Ferraro and the Legacy Garden. We will be gathering in the room just off the foyer, and parking is available at the back of the building.
The Murray Pinchuk Community Builder Award was established in 2013 to honour the contributions of the late Murray Pinchuk to professional planning practices here on PEI. It recognizes an individual, group or organization that has made an extraordinary commitment to making their Prince Edward Island community a better place today and for the future, in a way that touches on either the built or natural environment.
